I was once coding a game in my spare time many years ago, and a couple of friends came round while I was in the middle of it. I had my laptop open with code on screen, and one of them (not a programmer) said to me, “Is that code? Jesus man.”

I was like, “What?” and he says, “I thought you just typed, like, ‘man walk left’ or something.”

It was so difficult to explain to him the concept that a computer doesn’t just magically know what that means.
